Elliott Murphy
What excites you about Cat on a Hot Tin Roof and the role you are playing?
As Reverend Tooker, I am thrilled to be supporting such a talented cast. I hope to add some awkward levity to the mounting drama of this classic work.
What’s your process like in preparing for a show like this, and how does that process change (if at all) from other shows?
From auditions through rehearsal, Bernie has led a truly unique approach to the work. There has been an emphasis on community and collaboration that is not always found in such high caliber productions.
What’s your biggest challenge about taking on this role?
I auditioned for this production prior to officially moving to Colorado from New York. In fact, rehearsal began as soon as I stepped out of the moving truck. While am thrilled to have had instant community, just finding my way to the theater was a bit of a struggle.
How did you get started performing?
Having been a student with undiagnosed dyslexia and no coordination for sports, in the 6th grade I found refuge in a local community theatre near my hometown in Massachusetts and have never looked back. Self-expression, community collaboration, and bringing literature has been an invaluable experience for me and I am so grateful to be currently working on such a terrific production.
Why do you still perform?
Because I am being forced to do it against my will. Please send help! Either that or performing is an incredible opportunity to step outside of yourself and attempt to truly embrace another’s perspective. Most actors find love and understanding for even the most horrific characters that they play.
What’s your dream role, and what do you feel you would bring to it?
I have been so fortunate to have already played many dream roles: Petruchio in Taming of the Shrew, Michal in The Pillowman, Scoop in The Heidi Chronicles. Perhaps something more whimsical like the Cat in the Hat in Seussical the Musical :P
What’s a fun fact people may not know about you?
I build life-sized sculptures out of balloons. Seriously.
