Meet the Cast of Guys and Dolls: David Kincannon

Introduce yourself! What role do you play within the cast, where have audiences seen you recently, and where can they find you next?
Hi, I’m David Kincannon, and I play Nicely-Nicely Johnson. Recently, I’ve been seen as Joseph Pulitzer in Performance Now’s production of Newsies, as Gyp Decarlo in Jersey Boys at Littleton Town Hall, and in Cherry Creek Theatre’s production of Sondheim on Sondheim.

What is your favorite aspect of your role?
Nicely gets some of the best songs in the show. “Sit Down You’re Rocking the Boat”, specifically, is one of the finest musical theatre songs ever written, and it is an honor to get to lead the ensemble in that song every performance.

What is your first memory of experiencing Guys and Dolls, and how has your perspective on the show evolved since working on this production?
Guys and Dolls was my senior year show in high school, and has been one of my favorites ever since. Working with a cast that is filled with such professionals has reminded me how good this show can be when every member of the cast is hitting on all cylinders.

Which song, scene, or moment in our production do you find most meaningful, and what makes it special to you?
As much as I love singing “Sit Down You’re Rocking the Boat”, singing the title song with Cooper Kaminsky is an absolute joy. Cooper and I have only gotten to work together once in the past, but I hope there are many more chances in the future.

What's something unexpected you've discovered about your character/role/work during the rehearsal process?
I’ve tried to take Nicely Nicely in a different direction than other versions I’ve seen over the years. Trying to balance that while keeping the core of the character true to the script has been a juggling act…but I relish the challenge.

Quick! You are tasked with renaming a race horse--what name do you pick and why?
“Bubbly Toes and Banana Pancakes” - I love when horse names feel like complete non-sequiturs. If you’re not steeped in mid 2000s pop music, this will be exactly that. If you are familiar, then this one may seem like it's a reference to two Jack Johnson song titles. But…it’s actually a reference to a reference. Those songs get referenced in a recent season of the D&D actual play show “Dimension 20”, of which I am a large fan.

How has collaboration with other members of the company influenced your approach to your work on this show?
This cast is such a talented group of professionals, that I knew I had to be as prepared as possible from jump street. It is such a pleasure to be working alongside some of my favorite people in this community, and I want to make sure that I’m pulling my weight.

How does this production of Guys and Dolls differ from other productions you've worked on or seen
Even though this show was originally produced in 1950, and based on stories that were set even earlier, I think we’ve found small ways to make it feel timeless.

What's one thing you hope audiences take away from our production?
Honestly, I just hope they have a lot of fun, and that they walk out humming these classic tunes that have brought so many people joy over the last 75 years.
