Preston Adams (Lord Pinkleton)

Cinderella

NOVEMBER 26 — JANUARY 9

What excites you about Cinderella and the role you are playing?

I've never really seen myself being able to do Cinderella. Even though we have the Brandy & Whitney version, I just couldn't foresee any director looking at me and thinking I would fit into a show like this. And then being told Lord Pinkleton is being imagined as a non-binary person, and being able to explore that as I explore what it means for myself has been incredible.

What’s your process like in preparing for a show like this, and how does that process change (if at all) from other shows?

I try to make sure I always bring in positive energy, because I'm trying to imagine Lord Pinkleton being the light in the room, and bringing energy and adequate sass into the dynamic. It's important for me to take time before every rehearsal to check-in with my mental health and make sure I'm being my best self when I'm in the room.

What’s your biggest challenge about taking on this role?

This is an extremely busy time of the year for me, so I've just been trying to keep my life balanced and organized, keep stress levels low, and make sure my mental health is doing well.

How did you get started performing?

My mom sang in a band when I was a baby, and apparently I would sit in her lap while she sang and always be around, so it made sense that I would eventually make my way to the stage.

Why do you still perform?

As someone who struggles with depression, performing is the only thing that keeps me sane. And it gives me a platform to talk about mental health and gender identity and sexuality and let people know they're not alone in their struggles. If I am able to inspire one person per show, that's worth way more to me than the accolades and clout.

What’s your dream role, and what do you feel you would bring to it?

At this time in my life, my dream is to be Lola in Kinky Boots. I love how Lola is a mixture of fierce and feminine, yet tough and masculine. As a non-binary actor, the chance to explore both worlds in one character and light up the stage in a way not a lot of other roles are able to accomplish is everything I need in this life before I die.

What’s a fun fact people may not know about you?

When I was a kid, I used to do voiceover work where I announced movies on Starz Network.
