Meet the Cast of Murderers: Troy Lakey
Introduce yourself! Where have audiences seen your work before and where can they see you next?
At Vintage: I recently directed the fabulous production of The Legend of Georgia McBride - and I don't use the F word lightly! It was a fabulously talented cast that put on a fabulous performance! I'm very proud of that whole creative team! I was one of the assistant directors for The Inheritance. On the Vintage stage, I was Hank in Boys in the Band and Ralph in Shakespeare in Love. I played John in the play Cock at the People's Building. I will be directing The Perfect Arrangement at the Firehouse Theater that runs April 5 thru May 4th.
What is your favorite aspect of the character you play?
Gerald is learning a lot about himself in this journey. He discovers what his priorities are, who he cares about, and the irony of life & death.
You're having a dinner party and get to invite three of your favorite villains from media and literature. Who do you invite and what's on the menu?
Cruella (Emma Stone) , Tom Ripley (The Talented Mr Ripley/Matt Damon), Villanelle (Killing Eve/Jodie Comer) — alternates Cersei Lannister (Game of Thrones/Lena Headey) and Dracula (Dracula Untold/Luke Evans). My choice - so definitely Hawaiian Pizza, Dr Pepper and Brownie Sundaes
You've had the chance to perform this role before--how has it evolved the second time around?
The first time, I didn't have the chance to be directed by Bernie, the wonderful Ryan was the director for my scene. So it has been great to work with Bernie and Rick to explore the motivations and dive deeper into the character voices. It was a matter of dusting off my memory, keeping some things that worked, and finding new moments too.
As an actor, how does performing a lengthy monologue vary from work with a scene partner? Do you prefer one over the other?
The great thing about a long monologue is you won't mess anyone up if you forget a line except yourself. The challenge is if you forget a line you have no one to help you onstage. This is a marathon as an actor. I don't feel I'm alone on stage tho - since I play about 13 or 14 different characters! I am proud of myself and Mari and Mary for taking on this challenge.
Why should audiences come to see Murderers?
Spoiler - we are all murders! You have to come see who we killed and why! It won't be who you think! It is a fun journey where you meet some fun characters along the way. This is a cleverly written show that will make you laugh - about murder!
