Six Questions with Troy Lakey

Tell us about yourself! Where have audiences seen you before and where can they see you next?

I do leadership development and corporate training for my day job. In my free time I like to express my love for theater including directing, acting, playwriting and being an audience member.

You may have seen me here at the Vintage in Boys in the Band - Hank or Shakespeare in Love - Ralph/Nurse (Shakespearen DRAG). I was one of the assistant directors for The Inheritance. I have also been a director and actor in Vintage's New Play Festival.

For those who aren't familiar with this production, tell us about the story of The Legend of Georgia McBride from your perspective. What makes it unique?

This is the story of a straight man finding his inner strength and courage by becoming a fabulous drag queen. It is the story of chosen family - a caring drag mother and her "daughters" and the wisdom and love she shares with them. It is a love story between Casey & Jo, and Casey & Georgia.

What has been your favorite memory (or memories) from the rehearsal process?

This has been a dream team experience for me! I really wanted to work with Caden and Johnathan again, I couldn't ask for better partners on navigating this journey. The cast is beyond fabulous. It is wonderful to watch them greet each other with hugs before we start rehearsals and have fun playing and dancing together on stage. This is a wonderful, talented and generous group of humans!! I feel very fortunate.

What stands out to you about your character/role on the creative team?

The most important role of the director is to bring the right people together. Casting the right actors is probably 75% of the hard work. Because if you cast the right people, they do their homework outside of rehearsal, come with ideas for their character, and are willing and eager for direction. I am humbled and excited to bring this story to life on the Vintage stage. The LGBTQ+ community and especially drag queens need love and support with all the hate and legislation targeting them across the country.

Do you have a favorite line or scene from the show?

I don't think I can pick just one scene. Each character gets some fabulous moments in the spotlight. There is a drag medley where you get to see the growth of Georgia McBride that is fabulous. Be sure to hoot, holler, snap and clap for the queens when they perform throughout the show!!

What do you hope audiences will take away from this show?

I hope the audience will take away a new appreciation and love for the art of drag. It takes a lot of courage, talent and sequins to be a Drag Queen. Embrace and celebrate those that are different from you and support the artists in your life.
