Meet the Cast of She Kills Monsters: Chrys Duran

Hello!! My name is Chrys Duran (they/them). You may have recently seen me in the staged reading of The Legend of Anne Bonny as queer pirate Mar Read (Shifted Lens Theatre Company) or in The Laramie Project at the Arvada Center. Next up, Chrys will be in the ensemble in On Your Feet at Town Hall Arts Center!

I play Tilly Evans, aka Tillius the Paladin! Healer of the wounded and protector of lights! My favorite part of this role has been finding a younger version of myself within me, seeing how she interacts with a fantasy world, and letting her play in the spotlight for a while. Tilly has been a dream role of mine since high school, so it is an honor to play her.

After graduation, some of my best friends (and now roommates!) decided we wanted to hang out more, hence, I started playing my first D&D campaign. These friends have taught me how much this game can mean, which has influenced Tilly’s version of the world. It’s taught me that every detail of the game can have intention and purpose. So for me, every decision about every character or monster they encounter in Tilly’s creation of the world of New Landia is intentional, and has a reason.

My favorite moment in the show is when they encounter Miles the Gelatinous cube, and Tilly gets to finally tell Agnes how much she does not like Miles (Agnes’ boyfriend). It starts as a comedic encounter, but then develops into one of the more difficult moments in the show between the sisters, and I enjoy walking that line between the silly humor and the brutal honesty.

My favorite memory of this process has been bonding with this cast. This group of humans are the funniest, goofiest, and bravest people I’ve ever been in a show with. They make me laugh every single day (which is a problem onstage), but I look forward to every moment I spend with them.

In my D&D campaign, I currently play Rey, a half-elf rogue, who excels in stealth (she will just disappear) and has an affinity and love for daggers (she has about eight on her at any given time). She is so cool. I want to be like her when I grow up.

I would describe She Kills Monsters as a play about swords and fighting monsters! This show is just an overall a goofy silly time, and that it also takes you through every emotion you can have, so its a lovely all-encompassing experience. Come see the show if you want to giggle a lot, maybe cry a little, and see a fantasy game given life on a stage by a group of the funniest actors you’ve ever seen.
