Meet the Cast of She Kills Monsters: Conrad Mata
Howdy, my name is Conrad Mata and I'm playing Chuck Biggs in Vintage Theatre's production of She Kills Monsters.
Theatergoers may have most recently seen my work in Vintage Theatre's production of The Hombres, as Julian, or in Town Hall Art Center's production of All Shook Up. But the majority of my performances are as a musician. I have proudly performed on stage at Red Rocks Amphitheatre, Cervantes Otherside, Globe Hall, Hard Rock Cafe, and Ophelia’s Electric Soapbox. I am a producer, vocalist, and multi-instrumentalist. My sophomore album, Still, received wide acclaim for its versatility in genre, originality in style, and earworm melodies; with over 25k streams within the first month of release.
The best part about being Chuck Biggs is I get to be exactly as lame as I am. You see, all the other cast members are extremely badass characters. I'm not so sure I could pull it off as well. Thankfully as Chuck, I get to be my goofy self.
In my preparation for this role, I recalled media from my childhood. Some characters that have inspired my work as Chuck include Rico Suave from Hannah Montana, Cat from Cat in the Hat, Wade from Kim Possible, and Dean from Community.
The rehearsal process has been really refreshing. Every member of the cast is imbued with the spirit of play. An entire network of cast memes have been forged. My favorite moment from the rehearsal process would have to be one that reinforced my feeling of safety in making big and bold acting choices. I don't want to spoil too much for the audience, but I presented an idea to the cast that involves a shimmering bikini top. A little nervous that I was going too far, I presented my idea with a hand-full of prefaces. To my surprise, the creative team and cast members basically said, "Yes, AND!" I am so grateful our creative and cast is accepting of zany ideas. The audience will get the best show possible, because there is no fear in this cast.
She Kills Monsters is so important at a time like this. We are in dire need of original stories centered around women. We are in dire need of stories that assert that everyone deserves basic human respect. We are in dire need of stories that make us belly laugh. To those who miss out on Vintage Theatre's production of She Kills Monsters, I'll leave it to Orcus of the Underworld to say, "Yo, you straight up cray-cray."
